Navy, Media, and Government
So far, the year 2019 has been an amazing year of progress and serious developments in the national dialogue about Unidentified Flying Objects (Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon). In the first half of the year, we have had testimony from Navy pilots and sailors about encounters off American shorelines and over military installations. These testimonies have forced the Navy to begin taking the phenomenon seriously and to admit that there really is something going on in our airspace. The President and members of congress have been briefed, and the Navy has now begun to require formal reports from pilots and sailors who have such encounters. The UFO problem has had serious write ups in the Washington Post, The New York Times, Politico, and several other mainstream media sources. Suffice to say that the subject of UFOs has not enjoyed this much mainstream press and credibility since the Air Force closed Project Bluebook (1970) after the release of the Condon Report in 1968.
Storm Area 51
As if that wasn’t enough, in the last several weeks, a social media campaign that began as a joke has over a million people signed up to storm Area 51 on September 20 of this year in search of crashed saucers allegedly studied by the military at that super-secret Air Force base in Nevada. It may have begun as an internet joke, but the Air Force isn’t laughing. You can’t make this stuff up! (Well, actually you can, and people routinely do.)
President Trump and Secret Pentagon Program
The current excitement over the subject began in late 2017 when the New York Times ran a piece about a secret Pentagon program that had been studying the phenomenon. Along with that revelation came testimonies from Navy pilots and a publicity push from the strange new for-profit consortium of sci-fi, UFO science, and entertainment called To the Stars Academy.
Since then, the story has escalated all the way up the White House level. What does President Trump think? When ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos asked him, he replied that he did have “one really brief meeting on it. People are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly.”
UFO Days
Whether President Trump believes in the phenomenon or not, UFOs are nothing new in Elmwood, WI, the “UFO Capital of the World.” The residents of little Elmwood have a forty-year legacy of unearthly encounters and they are proud of it. The annual UFO Days celebration, every last weekend in July, is an opportunity for the community to celebrate that extraterrestrial claim to fame.
Enter UFOdays.net, a new website dedicated to collecting and publicizing the Elmwood Encounters and other UFO activity in Western Wisconsin and Minnesota. We want to tell the story of how Elmwood became the “UFO Capital of the World” and what’s been seen in the skies around these parts since then. We’re just getting started, and just recently launched, but UFOdays.net hopes to work in cooperation with local researchers and reporting organizations by providing them with a portal to publicize their research. We’ll be looking at the classic local cases as well as keeping our readers informed about recent activity. In addition to tracking the local UFO scene, UFOdays.net will keep an eye on the national and international UFO beat, providing regular updates, links to credible stories and media coverage, and occasional analysis of the phenomenon.
In addition to all of that, we’ll post stories about the annual Elmwood celebration to keep you up to speed with the biggest event in the UFO Capital of the World. Where else are you going to read about UFO Cake contests and paper-plate drops?
Unlike typical UFO websites and blogs, we steer clear of History-Channel-style sensationalism. Just because we “want to believe” doesn’t mean we need to be utterly credulous. The internet has plenty and enough of UFO nonsense, but venues that feature quality credible stories—both local and national—are rare. That’s why we try to use only vetted sources and professional journalism. At UFOdays.net, we are looking for quality contributors, but sensationalism need not apply.
